Single Seeds

No blending, no compromise — one seed, for the birds that want exactly that. Black oil sunflower is the closest thing to a universal bird food. Hearts and chips are the same seed without the shell. Nyjer is finch currency. Safflower is the one cardinals love and squirrels mostly don't. And insect grubs are what nestlings actually eat.

Useful when you know your visitors — or when you'd rather build your own mix than buy someone else's.

Questions from the backyard

What single seed attracts the most birds?

Black oil sunflower — thin shell, high oil, and nearly every feeder bird takes it.

Does safflower really deter squirrels?

Mostly, yes. Squirrels tend to leave it alone while cardinals, chickadees and finches eat it happily — which makes it the easiest switch if your feeder has been taken over.

What are insect grubs for?

Protein — especially during nesting season, when adults are hunting insects rather than seed to feed their young.
