Northern Cardinal

Northern Cardinals are one of the most recognizable backyard birds in North America. Their bright red plumage and distinctive crest make them easy to spot year-round, and they are frequent visitors to feeders offering sunflower seeds and other large seeds.

Northern Cardinals are safflower specialists and one of the most sought-after backyard birds in Canada. They adore safflower seeds, black oil sunflower, sunflower chips, and fruit like cherries, raisins, and dried cranberries. Safflower is a secret weapon — cardinals love it, but squirrels and grackles tend to leave it alone, giving your cardinals a peaceful meal.

Cardinals prefer sturdy, stable feeders with a generous perching area. A large hopper feeder or wide platform feeder is ideal — they're too heavy for small tube feeders. Mount the feeder near dense shrubs or evergreens, as cardinals like feeding close to protective cover. They're often the first bird at the feeder at dawn and the last at dusk.

Cardinals need dense shrub cover for nesting and roosting — thick hedgerows, evergreen borders, and tangled native plantings are essential. They're early and late feeders, so cover near your feeder station that provides shelter at dawn and dusk is especially valuable. Plant dense evergreens like cedar, boxwood, or yew for winter roosting, and fruit-bearing shrubs like dogwood, winterberry, and viburnum for natural food. Cardinals rarely stray far from cover, so the closer your feeders are to dense vegetation, the more cardinal traffic you'll see.
