How to choose
Most woodpeckers come for suet, so start with a nut-heavy cake. Woodpecker's Wonder and Peanut Perfection are the two they work hardest at. If squirrels clean out your suet cage, switch to Hot Pepper Suet: birds don't react to capsicum the way mammals do.
Bird Grub Suet adds insect protein, closest to what woodpeckers dig out of bark. For a feeder rather than a cage, shelled peanuts and sunflower hearts give them something to grip and carry.
Which suet cake should I start with?
Woodpecker's Wonder or Peanut Perfection. Both are built around peanuts, which woodpeckers prefer. Try one for a few weeks before switching, since birds take time to find a new cake.
Does hot pepper suet work?
It's the most common way to keep squirrels off suet. Birds aren't bothered by capsicum, so they keep eating while squirrels give up. Wash your hands after handling it.
Do I need a special feeder?
Any standard suet cage fits our cakes. Hang it on or near a tree trunk, or use a cage with a tail-prop panel, so woodpeckers can brace while they feed.
