How to Attract This Bird

Favourite foods

American Goldfinches are nyjer seed specialists and among the most beloved feeder birds in Canada. They're also drawn to sunflower chips, fine seed blends, and dandelion seeds. Nyjer (thistle) seed is their undisputed favourite — a fresh tube of nyjer will attract goldfinches reliably across all seasons, with peak activity in late summer when family groups visit together.

Best Feeder Types

A tube feeder or dedicated nyjer feeder with small perches is the goldfinch gold standard. They're light and agile, and will happily feed upside down on inverted-perch feeders designed to exclude larger birds. Hang your nyjer feeder in a sunny, open spot with nearby trees for perching. Keep nyjer fresh — it spoils faster than other seeds, and goldfinches will ignore stale seed.

Backyard Habitat Tips

Goldfinches love weedy, naturalized yards with seed-producing native plants. Leave coneflower, black-eyed Susan, cosmos, and sunflower seed heads standing through fall and winter — goldfinches will forage on them naturally. They nest later than most birds (July–August), using thistle and milkweed down as nesting material, so leaving native thistles and milkweed in your garden directly supports nesting. A patch of native wildflowers is both beautiful and the ultimate goldfinch habitat investment.

A seasonal favorite, often arriving in flocks to feeders.
